Ha Giang – Cao Bang Legend Journey 5D4N

The full sweep of the northeast in one ride, from the passes of Ha Giang to the waterfalls and hidden valleys of Cao Bang.

Overview

Two provinces on a single journey

Five days that chain Vietnam's two most beautiful northeastern provinces into one ride. You start on the famous Ha Giang loop, over Ma Pi Leng and along the Nho Que River, then cross into Cao Bang, a quieter, wilder region most travelers never reach.

The route is built so you never backtrack or waste a riding day. Cao Bang brings the fourteen switchbacks of Khau Coc Cha, the thundering Ban Gioc Waterfall, and the 400-million-year-old Nguom Ngao Cave, with nights in Dong Van and village homestays along the way. Small group of ten, local easy riders, and six flexible pickup points across the north.

Itinerary

The route from start to finish

Here's how the five days run, timed so you ride in daylight and cross from Ha Giang into Cao Bang without ever backtracking.

Weather and road conditions in the mountains change quickly, so your guide may reorder a stop or two along the way. Whatever changes, it's always to keep the ride safe and the day enjoyable.

Route map, D0: (Optional)

Pickup from Hanoi, Ha Long, Ninh Binh, or Cat Ba to Ha Giang City. Available on request – not included in the base price.

The classic Northern Loop opener: heaven gate, twin mountains, two craft villages, and a 100-year-old mansion.

  1. 8:00

    Local breakfast and check out

Start with banh cuon Ha Giang – steamed rice rolls dipped in warm bone broth, a regional specialty you won't find done quite this way anywhere else.

  2. 9:30

Quan Ba Heaven Gate and Twin Mountains

At roughly 1,500m elevation, this is the official gateway to the Dong Van Karst Plateau. The viewpoint looks down on Tam Son town and the two near-perfect cone-shaped mountains called the "Twin Mountains" or "Fairy Bosom Mountains" – one of the most photographed scenes in Ha Giang.

  3. 10:00

Lonely Tree and Can Ty Slope

Two short photo stops. Quick legs-stretch and fresh mountain air before the next leg.

The pinnacle day – the pass, the river, the canyon, and Vietnam's northernmost point.

  1. 8:00

    Breakfast at the homestay

  2. 8:30

Ma Pi Leng Pass and Tu San Canyon viewpoint

One of Vietnam's "Four Great Mountain Passes," running about 20km along the Happiness Road between Dong Van and Meo Vac, with the crest at roughly 1,500m.

  3. 10:00

Boat trip on the Nho Que River

From the cliff edge you saw the river as a thin emerald thread; from a wooden boat at water level, the canyon walls tower over you on both sides. Around 45 minutes of pure quiet between sheer rock walls.

Leave the Loop, cross provinces, ride into the quieter half of the trip.

  1. 8:00

    Check out and breakfast

Sunday bonus: On Sundays we depart earlier at 7:00 AM to catch the Dong Van weekly ethnic market – one of the best places in Vietnam to see H'mong, Tay, Nung, and Hoa traders gathering in their traditional clothes. After breakfast, a brief stop at the Youth Monument – a tribute to the young volunteers who built the Happiness Road in the 1960s.

  2. 9:30

Rest stop at Meo Vac Information Centre

Quick drink and bathroom break. Then we cross from Ha Giang into Cao Bang along Highway 34.

  3. 12:00

    Lunch at Ninh Chi Restaurant

The wildest riding day of the trip.

  1. 7:00

    Breakfast and gear up

  2. Morning

    Khau Coc Cha Pass

Locally nicknamed the "14-storey pass." Only 2.5km long, but stacked with 14 sharp switchbacks climbing nearly vertically up the mountainside, making it one of the most dramatic mountain roads in Vietnam.

  3. Late Morning

    Na Tenh Pass

A quieter pass with a long panoramic view down the valley to the other end – a winding ribbon of road beneath you. Far less famous than Khau Coc Cha, just as beautiful.

The grand finale – waterfall, cave, grass hills, and a swim before goodbye.

  1. 8:00

Breakfast and ride to Nguom Ngao Cave

A 400-million-year-old limestone cave system, discovered in 1921 and recognised as a National Scenic Spot in 1998. It's part of the UNESCO Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark. The cave is over 2,144m long; we trek about 30 minutes through the main route past three iconic chambers – the "Four Pillars of Heaven," the coral-and-dragon-boat formations, and the glittering "treasure chamber."

  2. Late Morning

    Ban Gioc Waterfall

The largest waterfall in Southeast Asia and the 4th-largest cross-border waterfall in the world – 30m tall, 300m wide, sitting on the Vietnam–China border along the Quay Son River. We take a bamboo raft to the foot of the falls (the closest legal view), then explore the area on foot.

  3. 12:00

    Lunch in Vinh Quy

THE SERENITY DIFFERENCE

What shapes this journey

You're never in a crowd

We cap every departure at a handful of guests, so there are no bus crowds at viewpoints and no long lines at the cave, just space to actually be there.

Every day moves forward

We chained Ha Giang and Cao Bang into one line rather than two separate trips, so you cross both provinces without ever riding the same road twice or wasting a day doubling back.

Riders who know both provinces

Your easy rider has ridden Ma Pi Leng and Khau Coc Cha in every season, and knows which curve to slow for, which lookout has the best light, and which roadside pho is worth the stop.

Living culture of both provinces

From H'mong villages on the Ha Giang plateau to Tay and Nung communities in Cao Bang, you spend real time with the people of both provinces, not just their viewpoints.

STAYS & MEALS

Good beds and home-cooked dinners

You sleep close to the route every night, in warm, local places we know well and eat well in. Both a private room and a dorm bed are available on every night of the tour.

On Dong Van nights you stay at Serenity Dong Van House, our own place in the heart of the old town. Rooms are private and self-contained, finished in local highland style, with the old quarter's streets and cafes a minute from the door.
