Cao Bang
Hanoi to Cao Bang Transportation: Bus, Limousine, or Private Car?
Ask “which bus should I take to Cao Bang?” in a Vietnam travel group, and you’ll soon get twenty replies. Nearly all of them are bus companies and drivers dropping a WhatsApp number. The question you actually asked, which option suits you and what it really costs, usually goes unanswered.
So here it is, without the sales pitch. Cao Bang is 282 km from Hanoi. Basically, you’re choosing between three things: a night bus if you’d rather spend a night than a day, a daytime limousine van if you want to arrive fresh, or a private car if you want door-to-door service and the freedom to stop wherever you like.
We are Serenity – We’re a local team based right here in Cao Bang and our Cao Bang tours start with this exact journey. This guide walks you through:
- Which option is cheapest, and which is fastest?
- Should you take the night bus or the day limousine?
- Where do you actually get on?
- What if you can’t (or don’t want to) ride a motorbike?

A quick word on names
A “limousine” here isn’t a stretch car. It’s a 7- or 9-seat minivan with big reclining seats
A sleeper bus has two or three rows of bunk-style beds
A cabin bus gives each passenger a small private pod instead of an open bunk.
Night bus or day limousine?
Take the night bus if you’d rather lose a night than a day. Take the day limousine if you want a good night’s sleep and a look at the countryside on the way up. That’s really the whole decision, but it helps to know what each one feels like.

What a night on the sleeper looks like
Here’s a typical night run, based on a Thanh Ly cabin bus:
- 21:15: The bus leaves My Dinh bus station in western Hanoi.
- Through the night: About 8.5 hours on the road.
- Arrival: You roll into Cao Bang City, anywhere from 2 to 6 am depending on when you set off, well before most hotels let you check in.
Night buses on this route generally leave between 8 and 10 pm and arrive in the early hours. When you get in depends on when you leave, but 2 to 3 am is the most common arrival time. In short, you save a hotel night and a whole daylight day, but you arrive tired and early. It’s how our own Cao Bang tours start too: a sleeper bus from Hanoi, then a few hours of sleep in a free dorm bed at our tour base until breakfast at 7:30 AM, and off on the loop.
How to Handle the 3:00 AM Arrival in Cao Bang City:
- Option A: Book a “Half-Night” or Early Check-in: Message your hotel in Cao Bang City in advance to inform them of a 3:00 AM arrival. Reputable hostels and hotels offer 50% early check-in rates so you can sleep in a real bed immediately.
- Option B: Rest at Tour Base Dorms: If you book a multi-day guided tour, early morning bus arrival includes free temporary dorm beds until breakfast at 7:30 AM before starting the loop.
- Option C: Request to sleep on the bus: Some sleeper bus drivers allow passengers to remain sleeping in their bunks at the Cao Bang bus station until 5:30 or 6:00 AM. Confirm with the bus conductor before departing Hanoi.

Why some travelers prefer the day van
The day limousine is quicker and calmer. Duc Duong, for example, runs both 7-seat and 9-seat vans from Hoan Kiem at 6 am, 12 pm and 3 pm, taking about 6 hours for 580,000 VND. You’ll sleep in a real bed the night before, watch the hills roll by, and on the 6 am run you’ll arrive by early afternoon. The trade-off is that you give up a full day on the road.
We think the morning van is the sweet spot for first-timers: you arrive in daylight, check in without fuss, and you’re fresh for the next day’s ride.
Where you get on matters
Most sleeper buses leave from My Dinh bus station on Pham Hung Road, while many limousine vans pick up from operator offices in the Old Quarter (Hoan Kiem). That small detail changes your day more than you’d think.
- My Dinh: The main station for long-distance buses north. It’s on the western side of the city, about 30 to 45 minutes by taxi from the Old Quarter, longer in evening traffic. A 7-seat taxi costs around 150,000 to 200,000 VND per car, but with luggage it fits only 3 or 4 people, so larger groups need two cars.
- Old Quarter Pick-up (Hoàn Kiếm): Luxury 7- and 9-seat limousine vans (operators: Duc Duong, Duyet Thao) depart directly from ticket offices in the Old Quarter or offer hotel door-to-door pickup, saving you taxi fares and transit hassle.
- Luong Yen: Another station with some departures to Cao Bang, but fewer of them.
- Noi Bai Airport Pickup (Intersection / Lobby): If landing in Hanoi and heading straight to Cao Bang, most inter-provincial limousine vans and sleeper buses can pick you up at the Noi Bai Airport intersection (Ngã tư Nội Bài) along Highway 2, saving you a 45-minute backtrack into Hanoi city center.
Always check the exact pick-up point on your ticket.
If you can’t (or don’t want to) ride
If you don’t hold a motorbike license, can’t ride, or simply want to stop for photos on the way, a bus isn’t your only option. You can book a private car with a driver, or join a tour that picks you up in Hanoi.
Private car: what it costs per person
A private transfer from Hanoi to Cao Bang was listed at 5,500,000 VND for about 7 hours, while other booking guides quote 2.5 to 4 million VND for 5 to 6 hours. Split across a group, it becomes surprisingly budget-friendly:
| Group size | Price per person (car at 2.5 to 5.5 million VND) |
| 2 people | about 1.25 to 2.75 million VND |
| 4 people | about 625,000 to 1.4 million VND |
With luggage, one car takes 3 or 4 people at most, so groups of five or more will need a second car. For a group of four, that’s not far off a limousine seat each, and you travel on your own schedule. Before you pay, agree on exactly what the price covers:
- Fuel and road tolls: confirm they are in the quote, not added at the end of the trip.
- The driver’s meals and room: on an overnight trip, agree up front who covers them.
- Language: ask whether the driver speaks any English, and keep a translation app handy just in case.
- Photo stops: agree on how many are included, and whether long detours cost extra.
If you’re a solo traveler on a budget, though, a sleeper or limousine seat makes more sense: it costs a fraction of the price.
Tour with Hanoi pick-up
Don’t want to deal with tickets and pick-up points? Our Cao Bang tours include pick-up and drop-off in Hanoi. Once you’re there, you can ride with an easy rider (a local who rides the bike while you sit behind), ride yourself if you have the right license, or go by car or jeep on request. Not sure which suits you? Our post on easy rider vs self-drive breaks it down.
Is there a train or flight to Cao Bang?
No. Cao Bang has no airport and no railway. The nearest airport is Noi Bai in Hanoi, and the nearest train station is in Lang Son, about 125 km away. The combined train-and-bus route through Lang Son is currently suspended. So whatever you choose, plan for a full day, or a full night, on the road.
Tips for booking your trip
- Book at least a day in advance on weekends. Limousine vans have only a handful of seats and a few departures a day, so they sell out first at peak travel times.
- Check your pick-up point twice. My Dinh and an Old Quarter office are a long taxi ride apart.
- Get the private car price in writing, including fuel, tolls and the driver’s costs.
- Pack for the night bus: earplugs, an eye mask and a small bag you can keep on your bunk.
- Book your first night’s bed if you arrive in the early hours.

FAQ
- Can I take a direct bus from Hanoi straight to Ban Gioc Waterfall? No direct express buses run from Hanoi straight to Ban Gioc Waterfall. All long-distance sleeper buses and limousine vans terminate in Cao Bang City. From Cao Bang City bus station, you can take local public bus line 03 (running every 30 minutes, ~70,000 VND / $3 USD) to Ban Gioc, hire a local taxi (~800,000 VND), or rent a motorbike to ride the 85 km scenic pass yourself.
- What should I do if my night bus arrives in Cao Bang City at 3:00 AM? Do not wander the streets at night. You should either: (1) Pre-book a room in Cao Bang City and arrange early check-in so your hotel waits up for you, (2) Ask the bus driver if you can remain sleeping on the bus until 6:00 AM (many operators permit this), or (3) Book an all-inclusive tour where pre-tour rest beds in Cao Bang are bundled into the package.
- Can the bus pick me up directly at Noi Bai International Airport? Yes. Most limousine vans and sleeper buses departing Hanoi for Cao Bang pass the Noi Bai Airport intersection (Ngã tư Nội Bài) roughly 40–50 minutes after leaving city centers. When booking via Vexere or directly through bus operators, specify “Noi Bai Airport Drop/Pickup” so the driver meets you at the designated highway junction, saving you the time and expense of traveling into downtown Hanoi.
- Which bus companies are the most reputable on the Hanoi to Cao Bang route? For daytime luxury 7- and 9-seat limousines, Duc Duong and Duyet Thao are the top-rated operators for punctuality and comfortable reclining leather seats. For overnight VIP cabin sleeper buses (featuring private curtained pods and charging ports), Thanh Ly, Khanh Hoan, and Thuan Thuc operate well-maintained modern fleets departing from My Dinh station.
- How far in advance should I book transport from Hanoi to Cao Bang? For regular weekdays, booking 1 to 2 days in advance via online platforms like Vexere or your hotel concierge is sufficient. However, if traveling during Vietnamese public holidays (April 30 – May 1, September 2) or peak fall harvest weekends (October–November), book limousine seats and private cabins at least 7 to 10 days in advance, as these small-capacity vehicles sell out rapidly.
